Week Six /Part Fourteen "Technorati"

Tried out the "Learning 2.0" search per instructional encouragement but found damned little anywhere on the topic except for screen after screen of other essentially unrelated sites. Could be I'm rather stupid or something but there you are. Tried out a few searches of interest to me with some interesting hits. Was surprised there was not more scholarly input. I also tried out some of the tags attached to these sites just to see where it was going to eventually end up. A waste of time in many respects. I can see where this could have utility in some circumstances, however. I'm just continuously amazed people find the time to pursue such matters.

Week Six Part 13 Tagging

I spent some time today learning about Del.icio.us and playing on the search engine. What a hoot. Most of the blogs I looked at were written by normal everyday sorts of people suffering under the misguided illusion that someone out there in the ether really gives a damn what their opinion is on any given subject. Yep, I could see how this might be a useful tool if I were spending a lot of time on the computer doing one form of research or another, especially being able to tag materials for future reference purposes. Anyway, it is of limited utility to me.

Don't Try To Understand Them, They Make No Sense

Now, today I had this great idea. I thought since everyone on the staff had a bunch of geegaws to hang on a lanyard around their neck to bear witness to their having completed the iHCPL exercises, they'd be willing to play a game of chance and use them for chips, winner take all. See, I think that whoever got to wear all of them on a chain around their neck could be voted "High Roller Of The Week" and be lauded as such. I mean, I'm talking about a weekly card game like Bouree where there's a pot and you bet against it until someone takes the lot. Imagine my suprise when I discovered that the majority of my colleagues would not hear of it and did not want to let anyone be the High Roller Of The Week, now or in the future. It sounded like a good plan to me. Maybe they have all been reformed or something and attended meeting to stop them from casual gambling. Perhaps I am surrounded by library automatons, like the workers in "Metropolis". What a frightening thought!

Week Five Part Twelve

Got myself all squared away Bristol fashion on Library Elf. This might be useful if you were one of those people lost in library land who wind their way on their daily pilgrimages to the numerous library entities dotting the county. Then you'd have a record of whatever was due whenever and wherever. Of course, libraries not on the Elf List could still be a suprise, I guess.

Week Five Part Eleven

I created a Library Thing account today. I could see how this could be useful if I was forgetful. Thank You.

Week Four/Part Nine

I used the Blogline SEARCH feature to locate an RSS feed I would like to add to my preferred list. This was not a difficult exercise at all. Did not have a great deal of time to play with other search tools but I now grasp the basic concept fairly clearly. I found Syndic8 the most difficult of the lot to utilize. Actually I understand it clearly enough to answer questions asked by my colleagues concerning the instructions to complete each step of the iHCPL process. Fancy that! A new role for me--computer guru and advisor to the unwashed circulation masses. I'm so pleased with myself I am more than usually insufferable today. Just call me "Cardinal Mazarin" and we'll get along fine.

Week Four/Part Eight

I completed the required steps by registering for Blogline.com, then added the requisite number of newsfeeds plus one unfortunate iHCPL participant's blog whom I'm not completely certain exactly who they are but that is not important in the scheme of things I reckon.

I can see how it would be helpful to be able to check all of the news sites attached to my blogline especially if I ever had the time to sit and look at them at leisure, which I don't. Anyhow, it's all accomplished now and I'm ready to move onto something else. Oops, in the excitement I wet my britches. Boy howdy I sure am excited about all the neat stuff I'm learning!
